Ireland’s Only Event for the Medical Device Manufacturing Market
As the doors closed on this year’s two-day MEDTEC Ireland Exhibition and Conference James Meire, event organiser UBM Canon’s UK & Ireland Event Manager, reflected on the successful ‘transition’ of the event to Cork after a 10-year spell in Galway.
“The overall attendance increased over last year’s event,” he says, “but as importantly, it was clear that this year’s show also attracted the high-calibre of visitors – decision-makers – that we’ve come to expect at MEDTEC Ireland.”
Indeed, the comment made by Dr Maire Ni Beilliu from Hemcon Medical Technologies Group, typified visitor consensus: “I’ve really enjoyed my visit to both the Conference and the exhibition; I found the exhibits very informative and very interesting,” she said.
With the Conference programme focusing on such subjects as How to Succeed with Innovation in an Increasingly Regulated World; Evidence-Based Design in Orthopaedics; How to Consider Human Factors in Medical Device Design; Product Development and Design for Medical Device Start-ups; An Overview of Risk Management EN ISO 14971:2009 and Post Market Evaluation, Surveillance and Clinical Follow-Up; and Materials and Surface Properties of Medical Devices, again MEDTEC Ireland’s educational programme received high appraise by delegates. “I’ve attended the MEDTEC Ireland Conference on both days and the sessions were excellent,” commented Walter Cleary of Compliance & Risk. “I’m particularly interested in the regulatory environment, and two presentations were especially good.”
“The accompanying programme of workshops were also well-received,” adds James Meire, “and the exhibition had an exciting ‘buzz’ about it,” he says, as visitors saw the displays focusing on the latest developments in, for example, packaging equipment, materials and services, contract manufacturing/sub-contracting, testing and inspection equipment, raw materials, assembly, automation and manufacturing equipment, design engineering and R & D services, regulatory consulting and electronics.
“There’s no doubt that MEDTEC Ireland’s successful mixture of education programmes and product development displays is a ‘must-have’ for Ireland’s all-important medical device manufacturing and supply chain – and we’re very much looking forward to repeating the success story next year, when we return to Galway on 10 & 11 October 2012.”

MEDTEC Ireland, the knowledge bank for medical device technology professionals, moved to Cork for 2011. As the second largest hub of medical device manufacturing in Ireland, Cork had long been in our sights as an ideal location for a MEDTEC event.
Quality was certainly the theme at the 2010 MEDTEC Ireland show, when visiting medical device manufacturing professionals capitalised on the innovations and developments on show at the event in Galway. This year in Cork this continued, with some of the world’s largest medical device manufactures located right on the doorstep of the venue.
With over 80 exhibitors showing best-in-class technologies, tools and tips for world-class medical device manufacturing strategies – coupled with a high-powered conference visitors to this year’s exposition - will have plenty to see and hear to help them build/retain their cost-effective and efficient manufacturing and supply-chain solutions.
Even amidst the economic downturn the global consumption of medical devices has continued to rise. Growing at an average rate of 9% per annum and driven by the changing demographic of a globally ageing population, medical device manufacturers continue to invest in manufacturing that serves an increasingly diverse market.
Nowhere has the search for medical device manufacturing excellence become more apparent than in Ireland. The Emerald Isle's aggressive package to attract inward investment has resulted in the establishment of manufacturing facilities for 15 of the world's top 20 medical device manufacturers.
During the past few years the emphasis in Ireland has changed from a low-cost manufacturing base to a centre of R&D excellence for the medical device industry. The requirement for up-to-date knowledge and learning in the fields of materials, technology and manufacturing has never been greater. This is particularly apparent in Cork where both pharmaceutical and medical device manufacturers have invested heavily in R&D facilities.

Exhibitor Testimonials 2011 For the second year running, we have found MEDTEC Ireland to be a great meeting place for the medical
The intimate nature of the exhibition meant a more personable approach to our enquirers was more conducive to doing business and in fact good qualified interest was shown in our products.
There were fewer visitors than expected however we collected several good leads and one in particular will result in a sale of our desk top laser marking system namely the TruMark 1000 that we were exhibiting.
